Gustaf Adolf and Louise visit Salem homes

June 18, 1926

Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Crown Princess Louise of Sweden were in Salem, Massachusetts today, where they "climbed the secret staircase in 'The House of the Seven Gables," and visited the Peabody Museum, according to the AP report. "The House of the Seven Gables, built in 1668, is said to have provided inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel. The Crown Prince "had to stoop in the quaint low-ceilinged rooms, crowded with antiques." He and his wife were the only members of their party to sign the visitors' book. The Crown Princess signed first, "in a large, flowing hand, 'Louise, Crown Princess of Sweden.'" Her husband following, signing the book as "Gustaf Adolf, Crown Prince of Sweden."
At the Peabody Museum, the Crown Prince, a student of archaeology, lingered over exhibits of prehistoric relics in Essex County."
